Ødegaard Delivers Again as Arsenal Beat Napoli
NAPLES, Italy - Arsenal looked set for a frustrating night in Naples. They had chances, but they kept missing them, and it was starting to feel like another game where the club’s lack of attacking options could become the main talking point.
Martin Ødegaard had other ideas.
Arsenal created several good opportunities against Napoli but could not find the breakthrough. The goal finally came in the 75th minute after a good move around the edge of the box involving Bruno Guimarães, Christos Tzolis and Ben White.
Ødegaard picked up the ball, found some space and calmly finished from outside the box to give Arsenal a 1-0 win in the Champions League.
It was a superb finish and another important goal from the Arsenal captain.
Ødegaard has started the season in excellent form. After scoring the winner against Chelsea last weekend, he now has four goals in five games. That is a big improvement from last season, when injuries and poor form restricted him to just one goal.
For Mikel Arteta, having Ødegaard fit and available has been one of the biggest differences.
"First of all, he needs to be available," Arteta said. "Last year, he missed so many games, so many injuries."
Arteta also believes Ødegaard is now finding better positions in attack. Arsenal have improved their ability to move the ball forward, giving the captain more opportunities to get into dangerous areas.
"We have encouraged him to get into those positions more often," Arteta said.
The Arsenal manager wants Ødegaard to keep looking for goals.
"Goals every week. Every game, goals. That's the target," he added.
Ødegaard's role has always been important to Arsenal, but his influence becomes even clearer when he is playing with confidence. He is often the player who connects Arsenal's midfield with their attack and creates openings for those around him.
The win against Napoli was not Arsenal's best attacking performance, but Ødegaard once again showed why he is so important to Arteta's team.
Arsenal may still have questions about their attacking depth, but with their captain playing like this, they have one player who continues to provide answers when they need them most.
